Spring Lawn Maintenance
Get Your Lawn Ready for the Growing Season

Here’s the thing about lawns: whatever’s happening in your yard come July was basically decided back in April. A thick, green, weed-free lawn is built in the spring when grass root and weeds are being established. If you choose to skip this window, you’re not saving time, you’re just making more work (and cost) for yourself later in the year.

The good news? You don’t have to figure out the timing on your own. Gunter has been caring for Kansas City lawns since 1950, and we know exactly when to step in to give yours the best shot at a thick, healthy season. Get your spring lawn care scheduled before crabgrass season beats you to it!

Kansas City’s Spring Lawn Challenges

Let’s be honest — this isn’t the easiest place in the country to grow a great lawn. Between the soil and the weather, Kansas City throws a few curveballs that a generic lawn plan just isn’t built to handle.

Quick Facts

  • SOIL: Heavy clay that compacts easily, drains poorly, and makes it tough for roots to dig in deep
  • WEATHER: Wild spring swings where a 70-degree afternoon is followed by a hard freeze, right when grass is trying to bounce back from winter
  • WEEDS: Crabgrass season hits early and hits hard, often before most homeowners are even thinking about their lawns yet

The Cost of Skipping Spring Lawn Care

In the springtime, it’s hard to tell how your lawn is going to fair during the summer months. At this point in the season it’s probably looking pretty lifeless after dealing with winter weather for a few months. It’s tempting to want to put off lawn treatment until summer once your lawn grows back. Unfortunately this doesn’t make the problem go away, it just delays it and often makes the solution more expensive.

Lawn issues often begin in the Spring, even if you can’t see them just yet. Some of the most common problems we see are:

  • CRABGRASS: Once it’s germinated, pre-emergent control is off the table, and you’re stuck fighting an established weed all summer instead of preventing it in the first place.
  • THIN TURF: Thin grass means more open ground for weeds to spread into, and less lawn that can actually handle summer heat and foot traffic.
  • STRESSED GRASS: Thin, weakened turf is far more vulnerable to disease and drought damage, which usually results in repair or reseeding bills come fall.

We’ve been caring for Kansas City lawns for countless growing seasons, so we’ve seen this pattern play out more times than we can count. The lawns that look best in August are the ones that were cared for in March and April. Early prevention is the foundation the whole season is built on.

The Foundation of our 7-Step Lawn Care Program

Step 2
Step 3

Early Spring Treatment

A balanced fertilizer to kick-start root development, paired with a pre-emergent for crabgrass and foxtail. We aim to get this treatment down before soil temps hit 55°F, which is the point where weed seeds start to germinate. Early prevention is the foundation of a weed-free lawn.

Mid-Spring Treatment

By mid-spring, a different set of weeds begins to emerge (dandelions, clover, and other broadleaf troublemakers). This treatment targets them directly, catching them while they're still manageable instead of letting them spread across the yard.

Late Spring Application

As summer heat starts creeping in, we make sure to get rid of any remaining harmful weeds and fill in the gaps with grass seed. This application combines fertilizer to encourage thick, resilient growth with targeted control for any stubborn broadleaf weeds still hanging around.

Spring Weed Control

Pre-emergent treatment applied early in the season is what keeps crabgrass and other troublemakers from establishing themselves in your lawn. Our lawn technician Jack recently put this exact treatment down on a property in Prairie Village to prep their lawn. This treatment will help ensure that their lawn is thick, even, and weed-free all year long.

"If you're somebody that's struggled with lawn care or struggled with killing weeds in your yard, early spring and late winter is the best time to take care of weeds."
— Jack, Gunter Lawn Technician

Spring Lawn Care FAQs

When should I schedule my first spring treatment?

Ideally before soil temperatures hit 55°F, which is usually around mid-March to early April in the KC area. Once that window closes, pre-emergent control isn’t an option anymore, so earlier is always better.

What if I already have weeds in my yard?

No problem, we can still help! While pre-emergent works best before weeds show up, our treatments also target existing broadleaf weeds like dandelions and clover, so we’ll get you back on track either way.

Do I need to be home for my treatment?

We prefer that someone is home during your scheduled treatment so our technician can check in, answer any questions, and ensure everything goes smoothly. However, we understand that’s not always possible. If you’re unable to be there, just let us know in advance—we’re happy to work with you to make alternative arrangements. As long as we have access to your lawn and any gates are unlocked, we can still complete the service and leave behind a summary of what was done.

Can I request the same lawn technician for each treatment?

Absolutely — just let us know, and we’ll do our best to keep the same technician. Scheduling depends on both your availability and theirs, so it’s not always guaranteed, but it’s something we genuinely try to make happen. Some of our favorite relationships at Gunter are the ones built between technicians and customers over years of visits.

How is spring treatment different from your other seasonal programs?

Spring is all about prevention and rebuilding. We focus on stopping weeds before they start and helping your lawn recover from winter. Summer, fall, and winter treatments each address different challenges as the year goes on which are all part of our full 7-step lawn care program.
