If you’ve recently had your lawn aerated and overseeded, first of all—great decision! Now comes the part that makes all the difference.
One of the most common questions we hear from homeowners across Overland Park, Olathe, Lee’s Summit, Liberty, and surrounding Kansas City area communities is: “What should I do after my lawn has been aerated?”
The good news? You don’t need to do anything complicated. A few simple steps over the next few weeks will give your new grass the best chance to grow into the thick, healthy lawn you’re hoping for next spring.
First… Leave the Little Dirt Plugs Alone
After aeration, your lawn may look a little funny. You’ll notice hundreds (or even thousands) of small plugs of soil scattered across the yard. Believe it or not—that’s exactly what you want to see. Those plugs naturally break down over the next couple of weeks, returning nutrients and beneficial microorganisms back into the soil. There’s no need to rake them up or remove them. Think of them as part of the process.
Watering Is the Most Important Part
If your lawn was overseeded after aeration, watering is what gives that new grass its best chance to succeed.
Our recommendation is simple:
- Water 2–3 times per day
- About 10–15 minutes per zone
- Continue for approximately three weeks, depending on the weather
- Overall, we recommend 1 inch of water (including rainfall) per week in the summer and early fall
TIP: Use an empty tuna can to measure
The goal isn’t to soak the lawn. You’re simply trying to keep the top layer of soil consistently moist while those new grass seeds begin to grow. Once the new grass is established, you can slowly transition back to deeper, less frequent watering.
Hold Off on Mowing (Just a Little Longer)
We know… especially this time of year, it’s tempting to keep everything looking neat, but those tiny grass seedlings need a little time. Wait until the new grass reaches about 4 inches tall, then mow it back to around 3 inches using a sharp mower blade. A sharp blade gives your lawn a clean cut instead of tearing the grass, which helps reduce stress on young plants.
Try to Give Your Lawn a Break
For the first few weeks, try to avoid heavy traffic on newly seeded areas. That doesn’t mean you can’t enjoy your yard—it just means giving those young seedlings a little breathing room while they establish. A little patience now pays off with a much thicker lawn later.
When Will I See New Grass?
This is probably our most-asked question. Most premium Tall Fescue seed begins germinating within 7–21 days, depending on temperatures and rainfall. Some spots may fill in faster than others, and that’s completely normal. The exciting part is what happens over the next several months. While the grass slows down above ground during winter, the root system continues developing. By the time spring arrives, those roots are stronger, deeper, and much better prepared for another Kansas City summer.
Why We Recommend Fall Aeration in Kansas City
A lot of homeowners ask whether they should aerate in the spring or the fall.
For Kansas City lawns, we almost always recommend fall. Here’s why. Grass planted in the spring has only a few months to establish before the intense heat of June, July, and August arrives.
Grass planted in the fall gets to:
- Grow during cooler weather
- Develop stronger roots before winter
- Continue strengthening underground through dormancy
- Come into spring with a healthy head start
That’s why fall is such an important season for lawn care throughout Kansas City, Overland Park, Lenexa, Olathe, Shawnee, Prairie Village, Leawood, North Kansas City, and surrounding communities.
Frequently Asked Questions About Aeration
Can I mow right after aeration?
If your lawn was overseeded, wait until the new grass reaches about 4 inches tall before mowing.
Should I clean up the aeration plugs?
Nope! They’ll naturally break down and benefit your lawn.
How much should I water after overseeding?
Light, consistent watering is best—about 2–3 short watering sessions each day for the first few weeks.
Is aeration really worth it?
If your lawn feels hard, looks thin, has bare spots, or just hasn’t looked the way you’d like, aeration and overseeding are often one of the best places to start.
