A healthy, green lawn doesn’t happen by chance—it happens with the right nutrients at the right time. That’s why fertilization is the most important part of our 7-step lawn care program here at Gunter Pest & Lawn. In fact, five of those seven steps are dedicated to precisely timed fertilizer applications designed to give your grass everything it needs to thrive throughout the Kansas City seasons. From early spring green-up to protective winterizer, we customize each application to support strong growth, rich color, and long-term lawn health.

Why Fertilizing Matters in Kansas City

Kansas City lawns face a unique mix of challenges—heavy clay soil, hot and humid summers, unpredictable rainfall, and freezing winters. Without the right nutrients, grass can quickly become thin, patchy, and vulnerable to weeds and lawn diseases. Fertilization helps lawns build strong root systems, maintain vibrant color, and recover from seasonal stress. But timing and product choice matter. Overdoing it can burn your lawn, while underfeeding leaves it weak and patchy. That’s where a professional approach makes all the difference.

Which fertilizer application is the MOST important?

"The first fertilizer application of the season is the most important—it sets the stage for a healthy, weed-free lawn all year long. Gunter’s early spring treatment combines a nutrient-rich fertilizer with a pre-emergent to jumpstart growth after winter dormancy while stopping weeds before they take root. Getting this step right gives your lawn the best chance to grow in thick, green, and strong."

Our Fertilization Process

At Gunter Pest & Lawn, we don’t just throw down fertilizer and call it a day. Our 7-step lawn care program includes five strategically timed applications throughout the year—each one tailored to give your grass what it needs, when it needs it.

1) Early Sprint Application – Jumpstarts your lawn after winter dormancy with a balanced fertilizer blend that promotes early green-up and root development. This sets the foundation for a strong growing season.

2) Late Sprint Application – Feeds your lawn ahead of the summer heat while strengthening root systems and improving color. Helps grass store energy to stay resilient through stress and drought.

3) Summer Application – Delivers a slow-release fertilizer that provides steady nutrition during peak heat, helping to maintain thickness and color while minimizing the risk of burnout.

4) Early Fall Application – Replenishes nutrients lost during summer and encourages new growth. This application supports recovery, repairs damage, and prepares the lawn for cooler temps.

5) Winterizer (Late Fall) Application – Applies a special fertilizer formulated to boost root strength and prepare your lawn for winter. This step helps ensure a quicker green-up and healthier lawn come spring.

Professional Fertilization vs. DIY

While it’s tempting to grab a bag of fertilizer from the store and call it a day, professional fertilization goes beyond guesswork. At Gunter, we tailor each application to your lawn’s specific needs and the Kansas City climate, using the right products at the right time of year.

Our team knows how to balance nutrients, avoid over-application, and deliver consistent results that save you time, money, and frustration in the long run.

Fertilization + Weed Control: A Winning Combo

Fertilization and weed control go hand-in-hand when it comes to building a healthy, resilient lawn. Fertilizer strengthens your grass, while pre-emergents and post-emergents stop weeds like crabgrass and dandelions from taking hold.

When your lawn is thick and well-fed, it naturally crowds out weeds and needs fewer chemical treatments overall. That’s why our Kansas City 7-step program includes both.

Kansas City Fertilization Service FAQs

Do I need to be home during a lawn care treatment?

We prefer that someone is home during your scheduled treatment so our technician can check in, answer any questions, and make sure everything runs smoothly. That said, we understand it’s not always possible. If you won’t be home, just let us know in advance—we’re happy to work with you on alternative arrangements. As long as we have access to your lawn and any gates are unlocked, we can complete the service and leave behind a summary of what was done.

Is your fertilizer treatment safe for kids and pets?

Yes! We use professional-grade products that are safe for families and pets when applied correctly. We recommend staying off the lawn until it has fully dried—usually a couple of hours depending on weather conditions. After each service, our technician will leave clear instructions so you know exactly when it’s safe to use your lawn again.

Do I need to water my lawn after a fertilization treatment?

In most cases, watering your lawn after fertilization helps activate the product and ensures it reaches the soil effectively. We’ll provide specific watering instructions based on the treatment type and current weather. If rain is expected, we’ll factor that into the timing for you.

Can I mow my lawn after a fertilizer treatment?

We recommend waiting 24–48 hours after a fertilizer application before mowing. This allows the treatment to fully absorb and take effect. Mowing too soon—especially after granular treatments or those that include weed control—can disrupt the product and reduce its effectiveness.
